The most common description of poker experts would say something about their aggressive and firm attitude when playing the game. In order to be called a good player or an expert in playing poker, one should know and apply the four main skills described in that game's strategy. If this is true, then what are these skills that a player needs to embody during the game?

A poker player should have the mathematical skills, the discipline and the understanding of risk taking. Mathematical skill is the first and foremost characteristic that a person should have when playing poker The person should know all about the probabilities or the chances that remain in order to win the game. Meaning, a player should have the skill of calculating the odds and have the betting skill. Let me raise this point by asking this question: if you have calculated that you only have a 10% chance of hitting the target, what would you do? Would you still give it your all or just quit while you're ahead? People with the expertise in playing poker, given that situation, will definitely answer that they will choose to quit.

Discipline is another skill that a poker player should have. The skill of being disciplined is being aware of the right time to play and the right time to quit the game. If a person loses in poker, that individual should have the discipline to not complain, rant or rave and most importantly to not blame others for losing. Having the skill of being disciplined also means learning from your own mistakes and moving on because let's face it, sulking will get you nowhere.

A good poker player should also understand how much risk is needed to be taken compared to the amount of earnings that the game has to offer. A poker player will definitely take a high risk as long as the prize to be won is high enough, meaning that it is higher than the risk that should be taken in the game. Who would want to take such a big risk just to take home only a few dollars?

In playing poker, a person should have all the necessary skills to succeed. Never rely solely on luck. General knowledge of the game (e.g. rules of poker, poker terminologies, etc.) is vital to winning. A skill in the judgment of varying situations in the course of the game should also be used. People will never be a good poker player if no determination or hard work is done on their part.
